Half of the patent applications are filed by only 3% of the applicants. Which means that at least half of the patent applications are filed by large corporations.

Dr Flocke has cited those numbers in his interview with the Staff Union of the European Patent Office (SUEPO):

If there are two things that don't fit together then it is SMEs and the existing patent system. Considering only the registration numbers, it is clear that SMEs are a 'free-patent zone' and not participating in the patent system. 50% of the applications are made by only 3% of the applicants, a third of registrations come from 0,3%, the so-called frequent applicants.

Those numbers are probably for any field, but it would be interesting to have them for the software sector.
